Happy Birthday, Laurel!

Eight years. It's so hard to believe it's been eight years since I brought you into the world. We've been through a lot together, you and I, and I'm proud of the way you've turned out. Keep up the good work. Daddy and I love you so much. Love, Mommy...

Do Not Patronize: Winship Restaurant, Sausalito, California.

On our aforementioned bike ride, we attempted to eat at Winship Restaurant in Sausalito. It looked like a promising enough place when we arrived. We waited five minutes or so to be seated, and then Greg went back to the restrooms. Our booth was one with glass accents above it. It was one of these, actually...

San Francisco, the Last Part.

Thursday On Thursday, we awoke with one goal in mind -- to bicycle across the Golden Gate Bridge. We made our way via train and streetcar down to Fisherman's Wharf, whereupon we rented equipment from some Irish blokes who were friendly enough and well-meaning, but had poor communication skills. At...

Embracing My Inner Vigilante.

I am usually able to tolerate a fair amount of public bullshit without calling attention to myself by admonishing the offender. I can glare silently at people who refuse to say 'excuse me' or display good manners. I can roll my eyes without exacting revenge on the people who feel turning off...

Cake, Take Two.

So Laurel wanted me to make her birthday cake and she wanted it centered around beaches and swimming and pools and such. So here is my effort, based on a Wilton design : Yes, I realize that in real life, there are rarely any fish swimming directly underfood when on land, but there you have it....

San Francisco, Part 4.

Tuesday Tuesday we went to Alcatraz . Alcatraz is smelly and polka-dotted from all the birds, but also fascinating. Laurel really enjoyed the audio tour and I'm sure she learned a lot. We have a lot of interesting photos, but here are the best: Tuesday evening we went to dinner at Chenery Park Restaurant...

Look at the size of this cantaloupe!

And Now, a Word from Our Sponsors.

I'm taking a break from the San Francisco blogging to toss up a few photos: Leave it to Ethan to decide a normal-sized stuffed animal won't do. He has adopted a giant stuffed tiger. Really, the only interaction he has with it is to lay down on top of it and say 'Night-night. Night-night....

San Francisco, Part 3.

Monday Well, we decided Monday would be a good day to venture out and try visiting Chinatown again. We made it this time! We visited a fortune cookie factory and some kitschy touristy shops. We saw some dried seahorses for sale among other novelties, and we rounded out our visit with dim sum. This experience...

San Francisco, Part 2.

Sunday Sunday we decided to drive down to Santa Cruz to visit the beach. First we needed to stop in Mountain View to exchange my sister's luggage which broke on the way out to California. That was an adventure. It took no less than one hour. The store was supremely crowded, more crowded than I have...

Why I'm Thrilled We Have a Library Card.

~ 12:00 p.m., Saturday, July 21: Laurel receives Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in the mail. ~11:30 a.m., Monday, July 23: Laurel finishes said book. All 759 pages. Now she's going back through and re-reading portions because, as she said, "I blew through it so quickly I might've missed...

San Francisco, Part 1.

Greg and I took more than 900 photos of our trip. I've been slowly sloshing through them, culling the duds. I think I've got the cream of the crop here, and I think the best way for me to do this is to post the photos and add captions, so just mouse over the photos for details. Friday We flew...

Almost There!

Well, we're all pretty much done with San Francisco.  We've seen a lot and we're beat, and I think we're all ready for our return tomorrow.

Stay tuned -- many many blog posts to follow in the next few days.  Wish us luck on the return flight!

School Supplies and San Francisco.

Yesterday we received Laurel's school supply list for PEGS . The first 2 items needed are a "Jump drive (preferred on lanyard min 512 megabites, you can find 1G on sale for @$15)" and "10 blank cds." I don't even know what to say. I guess I'm thrilled that in 3rd grade...

Mmm. Cake.

I decided to try my hand at a professional-esque cake, because Laurel seems to think I should make her birthday cake this year. I'm not much of a cake-baker, though I can tear up a loaf of homemade bread. I found recipes for good-tasting fondant and some primo buttercream. The cake needs some work...

Laurel-isms, Part XIV.

A recent conversation between Laurel and Greg: Laurel: "Daddy, do you ever have a fantasy about running away?" Greg: "You mean, do I ever fantasize about running away?" Laurel: "Yeah, that's it." Greg: "No. Do you?" Laurel: "Yeah! I would pick leaves to...

Give a Girl Some Model Magic . . .

Over the weekend, Laurel spent time at Grandma Smith's, who offered her 4 baggies of Model Magic modeling compound. Here are the results: Here's the detail of the little woman, whose hat is removable: The other figure represents Laurel. She is carrying a picnic basket with miniature silverware...

Pyrotechnic Party.

We started off the festivities with the daytime works -- parachutes and black snakes: Laurel rescued most of the parachutes as they fell (though one is in a neighbor's tree -- shhhh): The festivities required a fair amount of supervision to ensure Greg's performance was up to snuff: Although...

Harry Potter Daze.

We're eagerly anticipating the Great Harry Potter Blitz of 2007. The new movie and book releases roughly straddle our San Francisco vacation. That's good, because it will keep Laurel distracted enough to prevent 30 questions per day that begin with 'Mom-can-I' and end with 'Harry...

Another Day, Another Haircut.

That toddler can scream. He had another haircut, this time with my stylist, who is awesome . Ethan screamed the entire time, from the moment she put a cape on me (because that's when he realized what was about to happen) until the moment she shut off the clippers. Good lord. Trying times, these....
