A Political Conversation.

Laurel:  "Mommy, if you murder someone you get killed for it, right?"

Me:  "In some states, yes.  In some states, no."

Laurel:  "So how come if you kill someone while fighting a war you don't get killed for it?"

Me:  "Well, Laurel, killing in wars -- that's government-sanctioned murder."

 

- pause while Laurel digests this -

 

Laurel:  "Mommy, do you think the government is kind of stupid?"

Me:  "Yes.  Yes, I do."

We talked about a lot of other stuff (Democrats vs. Republicans, civil rights, terrorism, the Iraq war), but this pretty much sums it up.
