Happy 3rd Birthday to...
Ethan!
Today you turn 3. You've changed a lot in the past year, to say nothing of how much you've changed since that day, 3 years ago, when I lay in a hospital bed under anesthesia, waiting for you to make your appearance. Yeah, that's right. Anesthesia. We have modern medicine and we USE it. I essentially gave birth to your older sister without the benefit of the epidural, which made me a believer. Just ask your dad, who considerately pointed out my labor 'didn't look so bad.'
Anyway.
Today you turn 3.
These days you spend time incorrectly conjugating verbs, with humorous results. You say things like, 'Yes, him DO' and 'Yes, her DOES.' I don't really know where to begin correcting you, so I just don't.
You get mad when you say 'Vinnie' and I think you're saying 'Lydia' because you say them the same way.
You know how to use the potty but refuse to do so on principle. Nothing like taking a stand early, I suppose.
You hate ladybugs, filthy houses, messed up rugs, and one of the neighbor's dogs. You love grapes, apples, jelly, playgrounds, and me (and you even tell me so sometimes - mostly when you're in trouble for some transgression).
Like your father perhaps, you most look forward to the burning candles adorning your cake -- presents are secondary. And somehow you know that first we sing and then you blow out the candles, and I don't even have to tell you that is the proper order of things. You just know.
You hate having someone wake you up in the morning, preferring to wake yourself -- and in fact, this morning we endured a Ten Minute Tantrum because we had to wake you up for school. Why? Because you stayed awake last night in your room, defiantly bouncing on your bed until 9:30 or so (I hope we got that out of your system tonight, having just returned from Bounce U).
You love trains and cars and spend time lining them all up in a row just so...
...but you love your big sister even more.
Happy birthday, Big Fella. We're so glad you're here.
