How to Turn $5 Into a Million Bucks.

On a Sunday, no less!

  1. Pack the kids, bikes, first aid supplies (!) and lunch early in the morning.
  2. Drive to the Tesson Ferry trailhead of Grant's Trail.
  3. Unload bikes, fasten helmets, don overloaded backpacks.
  4. Pedal 1 mile up the trail to Grant's Farm.
  5. Park and lock the bikes and helmets in the conveniently-placed bike racks, thereby avoiding the $10 parking charge.
  6. Visit the Clydesdales at the stable because your 2-year-old likes horseys.
  7. Eat lunch on the conveniently-placed picnic benches, thereby avoiding overpriced fried park food.
  8. Ride the tram into the park because your 2-year-old likes trains and anything resembling trains.
  9. Feed the goats.  Cost:  $2 for 2 bottles of milk.  Beam as the milk peddler actually compliments your 8-year-old on her politeness.
  10. Look at the kangaroos, the tortoises, the parrots, and the elephants (or alpha-ments, as your 2-year-old calls them).
  11. Take advantage of the 2 free beers at hospitality because you need them by this time.  Purchase drinks for your kids.  Cost:  $3 for 2 kiddie drinks.
  12. Bike 1 mile back down the trail to the car, beaming again because everyone thinks your 2-year-old -- pedaling furiously and without complaint -- is the cutest thing on the trail.
  13. Load up and go home.

See?  $5 turned into a million bucks.  Worth every penny.
