Letters from Camp.
Laurel is at sleep-away camp this week.
I wrote to her early on. We received the response today:
"Dear Mommy and Daddy,
Hi! I'm having a great time! We took the swimming test today! I got a red band which means I still need practice. Oh well! How are you and Ethan doing? As for your letter, I am having a fun time! I am making new friends!
Love,
Laurel"
I knew she wouldn't miss us, and I'm glad for it. I want our daughter to be a strong and independent girl so she'll grow into a strong and independent woman.
Laurel has been honing her skills in camera avoidance. Each day, the camp counselors take a lot of photos of the group in their different activities. Some days there are more than 100 photos on the site, and each day I go through all of them searching for sight of her. Laurel has been in 2. Yes, out of hundreds, she's been photographed only twice. She's clearly quite adept at dodging surveillance. We have yet to determine whether this is good or bad.
Ethan misses her terribly. He has refused to sleep all week and has thrown a colossal crying fit every time I've dropped him at school. I've come to the conclusion that he thinks we got rid of Laurel and that we're getting rid of him, too. He's very attached to his big sister, and having her gone has created no end of turmoil. It has been a very trying week. Laurel is coming home tomorrow, which will be a huge relief -- at least for me.
