Offending Ethan.
Every morning, Ethan's preschool serves a 'breakfast snack.'
Ethan doesn't really need this snack because he eats a good, healthy breakfast at home. But it's part of the routine and he looks forward to it every morning. Plus, let's face it - the preschool feeds him Pop Tarts, and I serve him yogurt and fruit.
Recently the school decided to make a change in their breakfast snack offerings. Variety is the spice of life, right? I don't know if they received complaints or what, but they switched from sugary cereals and muffins to healthier fare. I guess that's the point, anyway.
This morning everything went smoothly until Ethan was greeted with the newest snack -- something called a 'pancake roll-up.' I thought it looked mighty vile, but kids don't care about that kind of thing, so I gamely encouraged him to take a bite. I was all, "Oh, look! A pancake roll-up um, thingy, I think it has sausage inside, Ethan! Doesn't that look good? Here, take a bite!"
My boy balked.
He balked, then in one toddler-esque exaggerated motion, he swiped the entire thing to the floor, got up, turned on his heel and stalked off to play with cars.
Hmm.
Surprised, his teacher and I tried to coax him back with pears, but he wasn't falling for such trickery.
"I don't think he just dislikes the pancake roll-up," I told his teacher, "I think he's actually offended by it."
