Our Little Activist.

Laurel is very civic-minded.

Within the past year she has volunteered for Old Newsboys Day, and she's tried to volunteer with the local parks and with a women's shelter (neither of which returned my calls).  She's eschewed the Art Museum for sandbagging.  She's donated money to the families of Kirkwood City Hall shooting vicitms and to less fortunate families at Christmas; some of the money was her own allowance and some was hustled from other kids.  The kid could hustle a monk.

But her longest commitment, the one she works with every day despite what a pain in the neck it is, is her hair.  Laurel decided about a year ago to grow her hair for charity.  She has to grow at least 10 inches of it before it can be cut and donated to a cancer patient recipient.  She is well on her way -- as you can tell from the following photos.

This photo was taken in the Glen Park BART station in San Francisco, July of 2007.  It's the station where Will Smith's character lived for a time in Pursuit of Happyness:

This photo was taken at Easter, this year:

Here's hoping the general fruitcakiness of the world doesn't jade her.
